A whole sociological study could probably be based around Saigon Rock & Soul, a double-album compilation of killer Vietnamese pop/rock tracks from the late '60s to mid-'70s, but that will be left to more academically minded types in order to focus on the music at hand. The tunes included here were surely the product of Western music's influence, as American soldiers brought the sounds of U.S. rock, pop, and soul along with them over the course of the Vietnam War. By the late '60s, a whole subgenre of than nac ("modern music") had emerged, as hordes of young Vietnamese musicians absorbed and emulated the music that arrived from overseas. Besides local clubs, many of the artists featured here performed -- and often recorded -- at U.S. army bases, where the soldiers made up a major portion of their fan base.

Issued as a mini disc, UFO's seven song Ain't Misbehavin' studio recording was pulled together in response to the group's low carb Misdeamenor LP. Following UFO's tour of the states in 1987, in support of Misdemeanor, the group used ideas from the tour as a basis for their next project. In an effort to get back to an harder edge, the revamped line-up of high flyers took to a no frills recording approach. Phil Mogg and crew managed to lay out a raw rocker in the album opener, "Between A Rock And A Hard Place", which is an energetic cut and shows off the unique vocals of the group's veteran front man.

The term 'Smooth Jazz' was originally coined by radio executives to describe the then new genre that fused blues, jazz, R&B, funk, rock and pop influences. Smooth Jazz tracks are generally down-tempo instrumentals favoring melody and smooth grooves over the sophisticated rhythms, faster tempos and long improvisations typical in jazz. Musicologists would likely trace the origin of what's known today as 'Smooth Jazz' back to a series of three Wes Montgomery records produced by Creed Taylor in the late 60's. All three were very commercially successful, which enticed many other accomplished musicians of that era to release records in the format including Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Bob James, David Sanborn, Grover Washington Jr, Herb Alpert, Al Jarreau and Chuck Mangione.
